Day 30: It's OVER!

It's day 30. Thank you to everyone that has commented and encouraged me during my 30 day journey! For some last day fun, I have compiled a list of questions I received throughout the project along with my answers!

Q: Why are you doing this?
A: To appreciate my closet, and be creative with what I have instead of buying more!

Q: What is the longest that you went between washings?
A: Eeeek! I'm going to be honest. One week- I went 5 days. Gently worn though I PROMISE!

Q: What is the biggest thing you learned?
A: Appreciation for my closet and all that it holds!

Q: Will you ever wear the dress again?
A: YES! It will be hanging it in the back of my closet for a while, but I actually really like the dress, it is a great staple!

Q: Did you cheat on the spending freeze?
A: Uh...yes, once again, I have to be honest. I bought a vintage suede coat, for $20.00. I could NOT pass it up! Oh, and the feather & flower headband I am wearing in this picture! Whoops!

Day 26 & 27: Black Friday, Go Noles!

Friday was spent enduring the Super Bowl of shopping, Black Friday! The day didn't start off so well. I must have been in a turkey coma because I slept right through my alarm! We were an hour late to meet Courtney, and when we arrived at the scene it was INSANE! I only witnessed one slight altercation over a pair of boots, they were pretty cute though. My little Leanna joined us and she was a real trooper! She begged to get up with me at 3am, and she did with no complaining. It worked out well for her as she left her favorite store with a very large shopping bag! I have to say, Courtney and I were very glad that we were in Lakeland's limited shopping zone for Black Friday, it may have been very dangerous otherwise! :)

I'm so full, in more ways than one! I love the smell of Thanksgiving! I love seeing family and friends come through the door with loaded arms! I wish there were more occasions when we all got together! I vote for a holiday every month! My black dress has taught me so much about thankfulness! I know it sounds silly, but it's true! I am so thankful for all of the other dresses hanging un worn in my closet....and JEANS! I can't wait to wear jeans again, or even pants! Someone asked me today if I had decided to burn this black dress, but you know what, I'm not. This dress will always remind me of how thankful I am for my closet full of clothes, and all of the other many things I am so thankful for! Happy Thanksgiving! 5 more days to go!

Day 24: Family Day

Well, it's on! I have made a homemade pie crust, a pecan pie, table centerpieces, and place settings! The turkey is ready to be stuffed and so am I! The rest can wait until tomorrow morning! Today Michael and I are taking the two older kiddos to lunch and a movie. We are then delivering meals for VISTE. What a blessing to bless others! I love Thanksgiving!!!

Day 23: Fall Frenzy

This morning I had a bit of a breakdown! Just in case you didn't know, if you want to shop for any Fall decor for Thanksgiving, start at Halloween! I went searching today and the tune of Jingle Bells was already blasting throughout the stores! I couldn't find ANYTHING FALL! Not even at Michael's! So my homemade table decorations for Thursday just got more creative! I will definitely post pictures! :) In effort to stay casual, but somewhat stylish...here is what I came up with for today!

Day 20 & 21

What a busy weekend! I am super excited to tell you about the many adventures of my dress! On Saturday Leanna had a soccer game, so I just put a T-Shirt over top and threw on my Keds. That night we went to the Mercy Me concert where we had backstage passes courtesy of Mike Scheuchzer, my elementary school classmate and guitar player in the band! (See photo, and I am not sure which band member is peeking through, HA!) It was so cool to see him and meet the band. They are awesome! I am convinced Bart, the lead singer, has a perma-grin, he is always smiling! As a bonus, Mike's mom was there!!! She was my art teacher throughout elementary school! I just LOVE her!

Today was church, column writing for Lakeland Local, and dinner at Mom's. I am now mentally preparing for a full WEEK with all four children at home to drive me nuts! I don't know how much blogging I will get done! I am also a bit challenged with the dress, as I will be very casual all week! I will have to be pretty creative to tone it down for a week with the kiddos! Only NINE more days to go!!!

Day 18: Outfit Reinvention!

I was feeling especially creative this morning, brought on by extreme boredom with this dress! I began digging through my closet and found this drawstring waist skirt that I haven't worn in years. I really need to let it go, but today I am glad I didn't! This skirt is one of "those" items. You pull it out while cleaning out your closet and say to yourself, "surely I will wear this again". It worked out today, but usually my rule is if I haven't worn it in a year it goes! This helps keep my closet "workable" and organized! When my closet is over-stocked I can't find anything I need, therefore stifling my creativity!! So here's to closet clean outs, and the items that survive the cut!

Day 13: Photo Shoot

It's Day 13 and I started out my day in running gear for a 10K race! It was such a beautiful morning and downtown Lakeland was buzzing with something happening around every corner. Whoever said there is nothing to do in Lakeland, isn't looking hard enough! Today I am going to a photo shoot for my new column with Lakeland Local! I am so excited! I am teaming up with my friend and local stylist, Courtney Philpot, to write a fashion column! True style does not have to be couture, although we ADORE couture!! True style is working with what you have and within your budget! There is nothing better than style for a steal, and Courtney and I plan to write about the best way to use our local resources to compliment any look on any budget! Day 11: Thankful

My husband came home from his Wingman group at church last night and told me a story I just have to share! There is a gentleman that recently started attending, and it was his 46th birthday yesterday. Michael gave him a Wingman button down shirt, and he said he couldn't even describe the happiness on his face. The gentleman proceeded to tell Michael that this was the first button down shirt he has ever owned. He's 46 years old! He even had to ask what the two extra buttons were for on the inside, he said he couldn't figure out what they went with. It's the little things right? As tired as I am of this dress...today I am EXTRA thankful for it! Thank you to a God that provides.

Day 10: Black & Brown

So I must confess, my co-30 day dresser friend and I had mini meltdowns yesterday. We are both beginning to dislike the dress just a bit! Unfortunately, our Target dresses are not holding up! Trish had to sew the hem in hers, and the clasp on the top of the zipper of my dress broke! So our advice for a staple piece such as this..QUALITY!! Especially if you are going to wear it for 30 days! I find that Banana Republic and J. Crew offer great quality for staple pieces while keeping prices affordable! Especially if you shop the clearance!!! There is always my favorite too...Neiman Marcus Last Call! But I'm sticking to my guns on this challenge..I signed up for 30 days and I have 20 to go...even if it includes me mending this little Target dress a bit! :)

Today's look is one of my favorites! Black and brown! In the unpublished and ever-changing book of fashion, the combination of brown and black in an outfit is forbidden. Until recently, the only shade of brown considered "acceptable" to be matched with black was a khaki or light brown. The key to pairing these two is to mix the colors throughout your outfit. An outfit made up entirely of black (coat, shoes, and bag) with only one element of brown (a belt) will look irregular. Switch out that black bag for a brown one and that belt won't look so out of place.

So my advice...when you're getting dressed in the morning, don't listen to the rules! Or better yet, make up your own rules. As long as you're well put-together and have confidence, you're going to look fabulous.

Day 8: Out With the New, In With the Vintage!

My Grana, full of life, and very spunky. Such a fun lady and so willing to serve. I can remember spending time with her over the summer as a child. She had our weeks packed with a full agenda ranging from time at Disney, to my favorite pastime...even then, the mall! I remember riding along with her to make Meals on Wheels deliveries and meeting many of her friends. She was always helping others.

Grana now suffers from Alzheimers. Last week was very sad. When my mom called, I could hear her tears through the phone. She had to move my Grana down to full assisted living. She will now be sharing what feels like a hospital room with a roomate. Mom was faced with the task of going through all of her things and trying to use what she could to make her new room feel like home.

Last night at our Sunday night family dinner, mom let me go through a box of Grana's vintage costume jewelry. I was ecstatic! As I weeded through the box of mix-matched clip on earrings and quite a few treasures, I could still smell her perfume on her necklaces. I began to think about Grana, where she went wearing this jewelry and what stories it could tell. I began to think of this not as a box of fun vintage accessories, but memories of my Grana. How cool it is to now have her pieces to style with! I will think of her each time I wear a piece!

Day 7: Right Place, Right Time!

Even when I don't know where I need to be, God does. Today was one of those days. Since my husband started teaching a men's bible study on Sunday mornings, I have been struggling with where I belong after our 9:30am church service. Being without him, I feel very out of place in a couples class. I tried another class and I still feel that is not where I need to be.

As unsettled as I was today, I took my bible and hoped something would happen to direct me. Then through His divine guidance, I was blessed to meet up with two awesome ladies to talk about life, battles, ministry goals, and most importantly, God's word. It was refreshing and uplifting. The best part was, I got my answer! God just said come, and I will do the rest! Sometimes, we are just looking too hard for the right fit, when all we have to do is look to Him!

Delay in posting today due to my morning garage sale, Leanna's soccer game, and my MUCH needed nap! Today is day 6 and I was faced with the challenge of making my dress casual for the soccer field! I have to say today was the first day I REALLY just wanted to throw my jeans on...but I resisted to stay on coarse!

1 Thessalonians 5:18 says be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. Each day I am finding more items that I can use to make the dress different, and every day I am more and more thankful for what I have. I am so grateful for what this project is teaching me!

Day 3, Early Morning Wake Up Call

I woke up early this morning, 2:30 a.m. to be exact. I couldn't stop thinking of all of the tasks that I have not yet completed. A scripture popped into my head, and I feel led to share it. Revelation 21:5 He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!”

I am analyzing this verse, and realizing the true comfort in it. No matter what busyness I am overwhelmed with here on earth, I find peace the in the fact that HE is making everything new. That is eternal, THAT is what matters! So many times my focus is derailed and this small scripture spoke very loud to me this morning. When I am tired and weary...He reminds me that he is in control of my future, not me! I am so thankful that he renews me, in so many ways!

As silly as it sounds, I thought about how this verse relates to the dress project! Each day I'm faced with the task of making it new! :) I was pleasantly surprised that even my own husband didn't realize that I had put a top over the black dress yesterday. He thought it was a skirt! Tells you how much he was paying attention to the point of this project when I filled him in on Monday! Ha Ha!

Day 1: My 30 Day Dress Project

It Couldn't Be Done, Edgar Guest

Somebody said that it couldn't be done,

My 5th grade teacher taught this poem to us, and although I only shared the beginning, you get the point I am sure! :) So today, November 1, 2010, I begin my 30 Day Dress Project! Inspired by some sweet friends in my MOPS group, I decided to take on the challenge! I so enjoyed watching them post pictures of their October 30 Day Dress Projects, that it inspired me to jump on board! I have a bit of a shopping issue, so I thought this project would teach me several things:

1. To use what I have and NOT buy more, (for 30 days).
2. To be thankful for a closet full of clothes and accessories.
3. To be creative with what I have to create different looks!

So for those of you that know me and my shopping habits, I am sure you are thinking it couldn't be done. But as you will see over the next 30 days....I am tackling this project!

The Dress: Black Sheath, Mossimo for Target: $29.99

The Misson: You may wash it as much as you want (usually done at night or in the morning while you're wearing your pjs. [hand washing it at night and hanging so that it's dry by morning is the most green & simple option])

You may wear accessories. we encourage you to get creative with simplicity! feel free to incorporate cardigans, leggings, scarves, belts, jewelry, etc.

Exceptions:: work uniforms, workout clothes, bathing suits, etc. (we don't want you to lose your job, stop working out, or miss out on a beach trip!)

Wear the dress as much as you can. get comfortable wearing it and allow yourself to be challenged by finding beauty & awe in the mundane act of wearing the same dress every day.

Give to Receive!

Not to go Jerry McGuire on you, but I guess you could call this somewhat of a mission statement, you know...the things we think and do not say. :)

I was writing an article the other day, pro-bono of coarse, and I started questioning the work I felt I was giving away. I started numbering the organizations that I give my time to, and analyzing the time that I was spending on each. I was overwhelmed and I am ashamed to admit, a bit frustrated. Being completely honest with you, I was actually questioning why I was giving away so much work when it hit me...I had lost perspective.

I then started to tally the clients, associates and friends that I had met while giving back and it was made clear to me that we simply must give to receive. In this world, everyone wants something for nothing. But what about the company that gives knowing full well that they may wait years before receiving? That's who I want to hire, and that is the philosophy that I want Crescendo to emulate. It's not always about collecting the high monthly retainer, its about retaining the client by customizing packages that are affordable for all budgets and providing service that produces results. Our clients are our biggest advocates and the last thing I want mine to say is, "They sent me and invoice and that's all I got!"

Actions speak louder than words, and what better way to prove this than to put your company into action...regardless of the pay off!

Shoes, Jeans & Service

What is is about the red bottoms on a pair of Christian Louboutins that makes my heart flutter? Is it the fact that I know they cost $800.00? Or is it the fact that the shoe is handcrafted, flawless and wearable at the same time? What about the $300.00 pair of designer jeans? Is it the design on the pockets or is the quality of the denim and way they fit just right? Honestly...I think it is a little of both.

After all- we want to feel fabulous. But we don't want to be suckers either! I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for. In fashion, and in business. You may hesitate a bit to drop a quarter of your paycheck on a ridiculously expensive pair of jeans or shoes, but if you knew you would get miles out of them and that they would be your go to pair for any event...wouldn't that ease your conscious?

Dependability, the kind that you don't even have to think about. That's what REAL service is! I love knowing that when I put on that great fitting pair of jeans, I am going to look my best and I don't even have to think about it! I know that they aren't going to stretch out by the end of the day, I can wear them with my heels or my Keds, and wash after wash...they will still be the same length! That is the type of service that we strive to provide to our clients! They are paying for service, and excellent service they should receive, no matter what it takes! Value...it's worth paying for!

Hayes Communications is going Crescendo!

After many months...and much thought, Crescendo-Public Relations Turned Up was born! We are very excited about our new look, but most of all the new venture! In life many adjustments have to be made. I made a huge adjustment three years ago with the birth of my 3rd child, followed a little too soon (for me...hee hee) by the fourth! Hayes Communications was put on the back burner so that I would have time for diapers, bottles, and bath times. This Fall the little ones will be going to preschool which opens up some time for me to work again! I thought what better way to make my comeback than with a new look and new energy! I am excited about this launch and look forward to where it will take me.

Being a full time mom has taught me so much. This season of my life has been trying and precious at the same time. I know there are situations that I could handle better, but I am doing my best and hanging on. Perfection is not an option in this game! Prayer is key! I am thankful for the opportunity to work again, and thankful for my family, the real reason I get out of bed everyday!

Summer Time...Or Lack There Of!

Summer is in full swing and I am not going to sugar coat this for you. Working at home with with four kids out of school is INSANE. I have had to take many "time outs" and deep breaths. In between entertaining the kids full time, I have come up with a few suggestions that may be helpful to other "work at home" moms!

1. Pray
Before your feet hit the floor and as you stand on them during the day, PRAY! I need to be better at this, as all of my strength comes from HIM. Continually pray that God will open doors for you to do what you love, and love what you do. Pray that He will give your life balance and provide the strength that you need to handle your family first and then your work!

1. Call For HELP!
Don't try to do it all alone. Babysitters are expensive, I get that! So pull in your best resources, your friends! Trust me, they want a break as much as you do! Work out a trade day. Take their kids one day and the next day they can take yours! It works wonderfully! If your kids are like mine, having friends over keeps them busy and you have one less activity to plan!

2. Be Realistic!
Rome wasn't built in a day. You may not be able to finish your work projects in a day either! Plan accordingly, make sure to communicate your summer time constraints to your clients. Give yourself some cushion for your deadlines so that you can allow for kid-tastrophies!

3. Prioritize!
Boring but necessary! Make a list, check it twice-evaluate what can wait and what can not! Plan out your calendar in advance making sure that there is always some uninterrupted time with the kids each week. They need some play days where mom is not on the phone or the computer. This is called balance!

4. Relax!
Don't get worked up and frustrated when things don't go as planned. It isn't worth it to have a Mommy meltdown in front of the kids! This gets everyone upset and then you are much less productive!!! Be okay with crazy!! Until the kids get older, it just IS! Stop and take breathers, nap when you can and be proud of yourself for juggling the most important role you will ever take on...the role of mom!!!

The Park

We had a blast at the park today! What fun it is to take a break from reality and just have family time for the week! Ice cream and slides, sand and sun. I can't say that I have ever had a better time than what I am having right now!

The Things I Love

I have been visiting the same time share resort since I was five years old. This is year 30 at the Driftwood in Vero Beach. I love it here. I love seeing the same families that I grew up with. I love to see how much their families grow and change each year when we return. Long naps, game nights, and balcony visits are what make this week my favorite vacation each year. Trips up and down the steps to rinse out salty eyes, juice boxes and candy bars in the cooler! It's not until I get here, that I realize just how much this place means to me. I am so happy that I can share this sweet spot with my children. These are the memories that matter!

Fashion Passion

The Fall Into Fashion Lakeland team was honored to help promote the Neiman Marcus Fashion Show at the Polk Museum of Art on April 21, 2010. Partnering with the Junior League of Greater Lakeland, the Polk Museum of Art provided the ideal atmosphere for fashion and fun! We enjoyed watching the models on the outdoor patio covered by white tents and chandeliers. The art, waterfall and outdoor lounge area set the mood for this super exclusive event! Music was provided by the band 10th Consession and was a fabulous compliment to the evening! We look forward to this being an annual event!

Happy Easter!

We had a great time on Spring Break and Easter! What a great family time! We spent time shopping, going out to lunch, taking bike rides and then topped the week off with a trip to Busch Gardens, where I have learned that I am too old to ride roller coasters! It was a sad reminder! Everyone is growing and changing! Kyle has shot up like 4 inches and is almost as tall as me when I don't have heals on :) Kennedy is a bit sassy and Kade is answering everything with "no!" Dora and Mickey are favorites and life is happy!

"Not So" Superwoman, But Darn Near Close!

So today I swam a mile at 5:30am, came home and made a real breakfast for my family, made 4 loaves of Classy Sudz, put together an auction package, brainstormed the tag line for my new creative company, changed diapers and wiped noses, washed, folded and put away the laundry, loaded and unloaded the dishwasher, AND still made an amazing chicken orzo and cornbread muffins for dinner. This is the life of the housewife reborn!

Hayes Communications has some amazing events coming soon! One being the announcement of my merger with a new partner. Details to come. Right now we are working on promoting some spring development seminars for local businesses focusing on how to effectively use the power of social networking. Depending on how these go, we will be providing another series over the Summer. In the Fall we will be holding our first annual Fashion Show, an elite experience for sceptical Lakeland residents. I can't wait to knock their socks off with this premier event featuring all of Lakeland's best kept secrets!!!

The Power of PR!

Saw this article and found it very interesting! I think in this economy businesses need growth, but they need to do so in a budget conscious way! Using PR, if done correctly, can be more effective and easier on the budget! There are a ton of creative ways to communicate your message without spending one half of what a major advertising campaign would cost! Guilty...of Blog Neglect!

Things have been so crazy over the holidays that I have totally neglected the blog!With that said, I can't fail to blog about the wonderful event that I had the priviledge of handeling publicity for! P2(Power in Purity) and Battle for Honor! http://www.battle4honor.com. This conference focused on the importance of sexual purity, a lost art in these days! Eric and Leslie Ludy were the guest speakers and we had over 1100 teens and their parents attending! The Joy FM was AWESOME and gave us TONS of air time! We were able to bring guests in from all over the state! We have had tons of positive feedback and my husband and I got so much out of this conference as well! What an honor to be on this committee of Godly, passionate people!

Hayes Communications is still in "mommy" mode and accepting the fact that I can't do it all! The little ones are now one and two and they take up 99% of my attention! But the little bit of time I do have left to work I am very excited about! Public relations and branding are my passion...but I know it will still be there when my little ones get a bit older! Right now, they need me more than the world of communications! I think moms get lost in the ways of the world, the constant talk of how we can have and do it ALL!! Career, children, wife and still fit in a little "girl" time! It is hard...and if we are not careful we will crash and burn trying to be all of the "things" that the world tells us we have to be!!

Hello.... Post?

I went on my social networking fast and totally lost track of time! Since my fast I have been on a fabulous 4 day Girl's cruise and conquered a few hurdles of motherhood! I feel like the fast gave me a true idea of how I was spending my time. My kids enjoyed me looking them in the eye and sharing with them. I am sad to say that giving them my full attention was something that they weren't used to. I guess I take for granted my time with them.

I am always worried about working or making the most of my time, when really they are the most important piece of my life right now! That is where selfishness comes in. I never realized just how selfless motherhood is! For someone like me that is admittedly selfish, I have totally had to re-train myself! God tells us to "Put aside your selfish ambition, shoulder your cross, and follow me." Matt 16:24. This is a verse that I need to repeat over and over again!

Since the fast, I have spent less quality time on social networking and more quality time with my family! It is nice to be back in the networking world, but I am glad that I took a break to put it into perspective! One day, my babies will be all grown up, and then I will still have plenty of time to do everything that I want to do now! When that day comes, I know I will look back on this time and wonder why I was worried about being so busy!

One Week Down-One to Go!

Yesterday started week 2 of my social networking fast! So far so good! I have really spent a lot more time looking my children in the eye when they talk to me as opposed to listening with my face glued to my iPhone. Honestly, I think God was right on track with this conviction! Don't get me wrong, there is NOTHING wrong with social networking but you can get caught up in it and loose track of just how much time you are spending on the internet!

Over the past week I have had time to pray more, read more, play with my kids, help out with school projects AND keep my patience, make cards and mail them to friends and tonight I am making dinner for a sweet family who just welcomed a baby girl! I think I am going to have a whole new prospective when this fast is over! Above all this has taught me that balance is a good thing! Romans 12:2 Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think!

Day 3-Dirty Hands and Sand in Toes

So far so good, I haven't even clicked on my twitter or facebook app on my iPhone! Yesterday was MOPS, Mothers of Preschoolers at my church. I just love this group! What a wonderful ministry for young mothers to meet and compare notes and confirm that we are all in the same crazy boat! Yesterday our bible study was on prayer and focused on the fact that it is communicating with God, not just asking him for things or complaining. I know I loose sight of that at times, that He really desires to be my friend!

God has really been showing me through these few days of the fast the value of time with my children and family! Today, I ran into a friend in the park while playing with my daughter and she was telling me that her brother just lost his 10 year old due to a serious illness and it happened out of the blue. I can't even imagine! She was telling me how this situation totally opened her eyes to just how short life is and how important her job was as Mom. She appreciates now more than ever every minute playing in the park with her little girl.

After seeing her I felt so selfish. I have been complaining for months about not working and how I feel so isolated here at home with my two babies. I haven't wanted to sacrifice my time or give up my work to be a better mom. In all reality, I should be celebrating this time instead of wishing it away! With that said, day 3 for me has been playful! Park, giggles, dirty hands, sand between the toes and ALL!

Day One: Social Networking Fast

The Challenge: Two week fast from social networking! Can I do it? Yes I can!!!

Over the past few weeks I have been hearing God tell me that I am spending too much time social networking and then that conviction was firmed up at church yesterday when my Pastor talked about fasting! I am praying this time will bring me closer to God and help me evaluate the time that I am spending on the internet!

I depend on social networking to help my business, to learn from others and share tips and advice in my field. But sometimes the time spent gets out of hand and I find myself glued to the computer or my iPhone instead of focusing on the child that is grabbing on to my leg! Also as a stay at home mom, I feel disconnected to people that can actually talk back to me...so the social networking is my way of feeling connected!!! But I have to remember to keep that time in check and focus on what is most important, and that is GOD and my family!! So the countdown is on and I have 13 days to GO!!! Wish me luck!

Reality

Reality sometimes hits you hard! Reality hit me while siting in my first born's high school orientation! With two babies 2 and under, a 3rd grader and a high schooler, I started to panic thinking about the proposal that I was working on. As a woman it is so difficult to find value in "mothering", when the world is telling us we have to be successful professionally! It is a lot of pressure! Since my daugher was born two years ago I have continued to take on more projects even though I had ANOTHER baby 8 months ago! When I started thinking about all of my responsiblities I almost started hyperventalating! I could have had a full blown panic attack right there in the high school gym. It was then that I decided I was going to have to back out of some projects and focus on who needs me MOST! I have been straining to find this work/family balance but I can't find the balance because I continue to take on TOO MUCH! With that said, with much continued prayer...I have decided to slow it down. Work will always be there...my kids won't! They will be grown and gone before I know it and the most important job is training them to live in this world. I pray that God gives me the strength I need to be a good role model for them. Who cares what the world thinks, I am shaping lives right here in this house and THAT IS ENOUGH!!

The Long Lost Art of Customer Service-Tips to Bring it BACK!

For the past two weeks I have been dealing with a broken Dell computer and different techs calling giving me the runaround from India. I have been told countless times by numerous people that I would be taken care of! This has NOT happened yet and it has been over TWO WEEKS! I am otherwise a patient person, and normally very calm but I am at my wits end! As I type now on a borrowed laptop that is probably older than I am I think to myself, what is WRONG with people? What happened to people honoring their promises? What about taking care of the customer no matter how big or small? That's the kind of company I want to support, that is the kind of company I will purchase my next computer from!

As a business owner, I want to provide quality service to ALL of my clients and insure that they are 100% satisfied! I want them to know that their account is important to me no matter the size of the invoice I will be sending them at the end of the month! Here are some rules I follow and sure wish companies like DELL would consider!!!

1. When you say you will do something, DO IT!
2. If you can't provide a permanent solution to a problem provide a temporary solution until it CAN be resovled permanently!
3. Don't leave your client or customer hanging, follow up and FIX the issue! Your client has customers too, be understanding of that and quick to respond with a solution.
4. SPEAK CLEAR ENGLISH! How many times have you been stuck on the phone with someone you can't understand? It is bad enough that you are experiencing a problem, adding further frustration by TRYING to make out what the person on the other line is saying can put customers over the TOP!
5. Treat others they way YOU want to be treated! Give someone excellent service, they are SURE to return. Make their business suffer and they will never return or promote your product or service to others!
6. Make it right! If you mess up, go ABOVE and beyond to make it up to the customer! There is A LOT to be said for refunds and special treatment. Some customers would walk away after an unsatisfactory incident. Give them a REASON to remain faithful to you and your product or service! Go out of your way to insure the customer is happy at all costs! You customer is your BIGGEST form of advertising and communication of your brand!

In this day and age, in a world that is "always on" due to online social networking and other outlets, you NEED to be sure that your customers are communicating positive information about your brand! One customer unsatisfied can make your business suffer! Don't get a bad wrap! Do what you say you are going to do, MAKE IT RIGHT if you mess up and make sure the customer is satisfied...no matter WHO they are! It MATTERS!!!!

Be Productive Without Being a PEST!

Have you ever dealt with one of "those" people? You may even like their product but choose not to use them because they are just too much of a pest! Persistently pursuing a prospect without becoming a pest is a key challenge for today's sales, marketing and public relations professionals. We have to walk a fine line between being invisible and becoming a "pest." Today, business is much faster, less personal and more technical. This makes it much harder to gain access to key decision-makers. Consumers are smart, resourceful and savvy and they have more tools and choices than ever before. Due to the ease of the Internet, customers are only a click away from the competition.

There are pros and cons to increasing technology. The speed of technology enables us to reach more people in a shorter span of time. With the convenience of e-mail and electronic publishing, you can keep in touch with 10 times as many people in easily a third of the time. But, as we increase the number of prospects we can contact, we lose the personal touch. With the ability to contact more prospects also comes the challenge of tracking them and being super organized. In most cases advancing technology allows us to create professional-looking communications fast without having to spend a lot of money.

Key Challenges: There is a fine line to walk between going unnoticed and overwhelming potential clients with too much information or information that is not of interest to them. It is important to prepare and understand what their expectations for communication are. While prospects may be interested in a particular product or service, they might not be ready to buy at that particular moment.You want to stay in touch with prospects and keep communications open so that you are the chosen vendor when they are ready to buy!

Unless a message is highly differentiated or uncommonly attractive, it's unlikely you'll be remembered. They won't return calls, reply to e-mails, accept meetings, or go to websites, blogs or online newsletters. I have learned that most prospects don't want to be sold. Try to keep that in mind when communicating to them by offering information NOT forcing information. If I've already made initial contact with a prospect, I ask about the next steps and how to proceed. This gives me a better understanding of what the prospect expects and it also helps turn a sales call into a relationship. Sometimes keeping top-of-mind is challenging, so just ask the prospect: "How would you like me to stay in touch with you?"

Be courteous and respectful of your prospects time, and do you best to form a relationship where communication is natural and comfortable. Finally an old, yet effective method of staying in touch is to drop by and leave something for the receptionist to give to the prospect. Just be sure that it's interesting and relevant to them so that you will be productive and NOT a pest!

Computer Issues and Dell is HORRIBLE

Okay it has been a week now since my initial call to Dell to report the issues with my PC. I was told that a Technician would be calling to schedule service in one to two business days. Well that never happened. I am STILL waiting. No calls, no updates, NO NOTHING! I have never received such horrible customer service! I have called once a day, for a week and each call has lasted no less than 45 minutes. Transferred and transferred until I get to the person that tells me someone will contact me within 2 days. With that said..I recommend that you never buy a Dell.

As far as working, I can't do anything and if this has taught me anything it is to save your most important and most used documents to another drive! I can't describe how paralyzed I feel without my files! But onward I march...with no files...and no working desktop! I can't wait until Christmas! Santa is bringing me a MAC!!!

Working Mom's Guide to Shopping on a Budget!

I feel like every article I read lately starts off with, "In these economic times." Gloom and doom is no fun for those of us that would like to keep our working wardrobe chic! Here are some great money saving tips to keep you at the mall!

Buy Timeless Pieces:
Your basic staples such as that little black dress, a great white shirt or a blazer can be dressed up or down and will anchor an outfit. Spend on accessories such as bags, shoes, or jewelry to make the look different with each wear!

Shop Your Closet:
Use what you have! Mix and match pieces, belt that cardigan you never wear with a thin leather belt. Throw a vest over a shapeless dress to add flare or wear a bold necklace with a plain top! Put on a pair of shoes that will stand out and have everyone asking, "How does she pull THAT off?"

Find a Good Tailor:
This will help you prolong the life of your clothes. You can have buttons re-sewn, pants taken in or out, dresses re-himmed, etc.

Shop the Clearance Rack:
Of coarse items placed in the front of the store are going to grab your attention, but guess what? In a week or so, they will be on the clearance rack and you will pay sometimes less than HALF for it! Do what I do and skip to the back right to the clearance rack! You will get so much more for your money!

Buy What You Will Wear:
No matter how great the sale, don't waste your time on something that you won't wear! Don't invent scenarios to justify a purchase! Its better to keep searching that sale rack until you find the perfect wearable piece!

Time Management

At the end of the day when my husband comes home the first thing he asks is, "honey what did you do all day?" Most days, I can't even tell him! I am the worst when it comes to time management so I started researching helpful tips for managing my day as a work at home mom! I hope these will help you too! These tips are courtesy of the Mayo Clinic staff!

* Plan each day. Planning your day can help you accomplish more and feel more in control of your life. Write a to-do list, putting the most important tasks at the top. Keep a schedule of your daily activities to minimize conflicts and last-minute rushes.
* Prioritize your tasks. Time-consuming but relatively unimportant tasks can consume a lot of your day. Prioritizing tasks will ensure that you spend your time and energy on those that are truly important to you.
* Say no to nonessential tasks. Consider your goals and schedule before agreeing to take on additional work.
* Delegate. Take a look at your to-do list and consider what you can pass on to someone else.
* Take the time you need to do a quality job. Doing work right the first time may take more time upfront, but errors usually result in time spent making corrections, which takes more time overall.
* Break large, time-consuming tasks into smaller tasks. Work on them a few minutes at a time until you get them all done.
* Practice the 10-minute rule. Work on a dreaded task for 10 minutes each day. Once you get started, you may find you can finish it.
* Evaluate how you're spending your time. Keep a diary of everything you do for three days to determine how you're spending your time. Look for time that can be used more wisely. For example, could you take a bus or train to work and use the commute to catch up on reading? If so, you could free up some time to exercise or spend with family or friends.
* Limit distractions. Block out time on your calendar for big projects. During that time, close your door and turn off your phone, pager and e-mail.
* Get plenty of sleep, have a healthy diet and exercise regularly. A healthy lifestyle can improve your focus and concentration, which will help improve your efficiency so that you can complete your work in less time.
* Take a time management course. If your employer offers continuing education, take a time management class. If your workplace doesn't have one, find out if a local community college, university or community education program does.
* Take a break when needed. Too much stress can derail your attempts at getting organized. When you need a break, take one. Take a walk. Do some quick stretches at your workstation. Take a day of vacation to rest and re-energize.

Using Public Relations to Boost Your Business in Slow Economic Times

In these tough economic times strategic public relations efforts will help you perservere as well as position you to be first in line for the anxiously awaited upturn! Here are some ideas for communicating your business’s messages during these economic lulls.

Focus on your unique value, not price. People are looking for quality services and products that provide real benefits. Effective communication of the unique and worthwhile qualities that you are offering, along with cost benefits (cost benefit can be anything from increased business effectiveness to sanity-restoring recreational splurging) will help keep your business on the “necessity” list during budget reviews.

Find more effective communications venues and utilize them. Most companies can’t afford expansion into communications channels that have worked for them in the past. Social media, used effectively, provides excellent benefits for both business and consumers. Done wrong, it’s a waste of time and may even damage a company’s brand story.

Be front and center. Focus on keeping your company in the public eye and establishing your expertise. It is also smart to display signs of an active engaged company such as blogs, podcasts, and videos.

Nurture your relationships with your existing customers. Retaining your critically important regular customers is of great benefit through good times and bad. Now is also an excellent time to communicate and be honest with customers, most likely through social media outreach. You want to find out what features and services they value so that you know where you can cut if you need to and what is working that needs to be retained. You can also use this knowledge when the economy recovers to drive increased success!

Most importantly, be TRUE! Be true to your customers and take care of them. Even if a person or business can't afford your product or service at this time, if you are true, they will return as soon as things turn around!

In Honor of Michael Jackson

WOW! So hard to believe he is gone! Thriller was my very first vinyl album!!! I can remember dancing for hours in my bedroom which was the size of a large box, but I didn't care! I remember watching the Thriller video for the first time and being scared but when they started dancing it was all over! I watched it a million times to memorize the dance! Although Michael Jackson has been through a lot...he was indeed a talented artist who brought joy though his music to MANY of us! In honor of Michael, my daughters and I held a dance party to his music in the living room last night! It was a blast! I pray God will protect his family!
